Director’s Update

Dear LMACS families:

Lowell Middlesex Academy has been approved by the Department of Education to open the 2020-2021 school year by implementing a Hybrid Model.  Although it appears that most school districts in our area will be implementing a hybrid teaching and learning model, all those models will look a little bit different.  We are finalizing the specific details of the school year with guidance from the Massachusetts Department of Education.  Our 2020-2021 calendar is found on this website and shows the school year beginning on Wednesday, September 16, 2020.

Please read the Lowell Middlesex Academy Charter School Reopening Plan Executive Summary on our web page to learn about all the safety precautions we have taken in preparation for the re-opening.  Also, watch your mail box and email for important updates from advisors and for specific information about your student/s.  The forthcoming information will include the health and safety policies that will be mandated starting on September 16, 2020 the first day of school.  If you have any questions please get in touch with your student’s advisor at the end of August. We will be implementing a hybrid/blended model which means a combination of in school and remote learning. Our goal is to provide a SAFE, convenient and flexible way for our students to earn credit.  This is a generic example of what the schedules will look like:

Sample Schedule

Days In-person Remote
Monday-Tuesday Group 1 Group 2
Wednesday Groups 1 and 2
Thursday-Friday Group 2 Group 1
8:30 to 12:30 grab and go lunch 8:30 – 12:30/on demand
Students will be assigned to either Group 1 or Group 2 and will attend in-person classes 2 days a week either Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday.  Students will learn remotely the remainder of the week with specific assignments and zoom meetings scheduled with their teachers.

At the end of the last academic year, I told you all about incredible work our teachers did during the shut-down…and that work has been on-going throughout the summer.  We have:

  • re-configured and upgraded the HAVC system in the Pollard Building, purchased adequate disinfectants and cleaning products for classrooms, offices and hallways, purchased PPE for all students and staff; and installed signage to facilitate re-designed traffic patterns within the school.
  • ordered Chromebooks for every student to take home and use while working remotely;
  • increased access to state-of-the-art teaching and learning resources;
  • enhanced and expanded our social/emotional support programs;
  • planned for enhanced and on-going teacher professional development.

Our work is on-going as we prepare to re-open and we want to assure you that the safety, health and well-being of our students, families, and teacher/staff is now and will remain our top priority.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and, as always, make sure you tell your friends to join you at LMACS in the fall. It’s a convenient and flexible way to earn credit. Remember…bring a friend and earn a Dunkin’s Card.
